Seven killed, three missing in landslides in Palpa and Baglung after persistent rainfall

Ten deaths have been reported so far following continuous rainfall that began on September 25.

Landslides triggered by continuous rainfall have killed seven people and left three others missing in Palpa and Baglung districts.

In Baglung, four members of the same family died after a landslide buried their house in Nisikhola Rural Municipality-3. The victims have been identified as Shyamkumari BK and her three sons, Manoj, Mukesh and Nishan BK, according to District Police Office chief Phanindra Prasai. Police have recovered three of the four bodies, while further details of the incident are awaited.

In Palpa, two people were killed in separate landslides. The victims were 75-year-old Sher Bahadur Chidi of Rupse Rajauri in Mathagadhi Rural Municipality-2 and 59-year-old Krishnakumari Saru of Thimure Dhustung in Ribdikot Rural Municipality-6.

Police recovered both bodies and sent them to District Hospital Palpa in Tansen for post-mortem examinations, said Deputy Superintendent of Police Bhimlal Bhattarai.

Three people are also missing in Palpa after a landslide buried a house belonging to Lil Bahadur Ghartimagar in Kaseni Bhaisikatta, Mathagadhi Rural Municipality-3. Two members of Ghartimagar's family and the daughter of a neighbour are unaccounted for.

Police and local authorities are continuing search and rescue efforts for the missing people.

According to updates from the NDRRMA, three people were killed in floods and landslides on September 25 and 26.

Landslides block roads across Baglung

Continuous rainfall has disrupted road connectivity across Baglung, with floods and landslides blocking the Kaligandaki Corridor, Mid-Hill Highway and dozens of local roads.

The Galkot–Tarakhola road has been blocked since Friday after the Tarakhola River eroded a section of the paved road near Gaighat Waterfall. Landslides have also obstructed roads linking Baglung Bazaar with Bhakunde, Sigana, Saykot and other settlements.

The main road connecting Baglung Bazaar with southern parts of the district through Dablang, Balewa and Kushmisera has also been blocked, disrupting transport to southern Baglung.

Other affected routes include the Baglung Bazaar–Mulpani–Titaure road, roads to Bareng, local roads in Nisikhola and several rural roads in Dhorpatan.

Superintendent of Police Phanindra Prasai of the District Police Office, Baglung, said authorities were coordinating with road project officials, the Road Division Office, contractors and local governments to clear the blocked roads.

The prolonged disruption has affected transportation between several rural settlements and the district headquarters.

Floods, landslides disrupt roads and bridges across Western Nepal

Heavy rainfall has triggered floods and landslides across western Nepal, damaging bridges, roads and buildings and disrupting transport links in several districts.

In Myagdi, the Kali Gandaki River swept away a motorable bridge connecting Pokharebagar in Annapurna Rural Municipality–6 with Naulibagar in Bhurung-Tatopani, Ward 2, along the Beni–Jomsom–Korala road. According to Annapurna Rural Municipality Chair Bharat Kumar Pun, the incident has cut off transport links to Wards 2, 3 and 4 of the municipality as well as connectivity with Mustang.

Two houses have also been buried by landslides in Ghiwang of Ward 5 and Phagham of Ward 3. Authorities are searching for two people believed to be trapped under the debris.

The Kali Gandaki River has further eroded the road at Kham Bhitta along the Beni–Jomsom route, while Nilgiri Basic School in Gharap, Ward 4, has also been damaged.

In Syangja, floodwaters from the Kali Gandaki River washed away a motorable bridge connecting Mirmi in Syangja's Kali Gandaki Rural Municipality–7 with Harmichaur in Gulmi's Kali Gandaki Rural Municipality–1. Heavy rainfall also prompted the Kali Gandaki 'A' Hydropower Project at Mirmi to open all its gates and halt electricity generation. Setibeni Bazaar, located at the junction of Syangja, Parbat and Gulmi districts, has been inundated.

Meanwhile, the Besisahar–Chame road in Lamjung has been completely blocked after a landslide struck Khar Khare cliff in Besisahar Municipality–6 on Sunday morning. Police said the road has also subsided about 200 metres north of the landslide site. Continued rainfall has made debris clearance and repairs difficult.

The Siddhartha Highway has also been obstructed by landslides in Syangja. The Waling–Syangja section was blocked after landslides occurred at Tindhare in Putalibazar Municipality–1 and Rambachha in Waling Municipality–1. Police, local authorities and the Department of Roads are working to reopen the highway.

Authorities are continuing rescue, clearance and repair efforts as heavy rain persists.

Floods inundate 500 houses in Saptari

More than 2,000 people have been affected after floods triggered by continuous rainfall inundated around 500 houses in Saptari district.

Floodwaters entered 483 houses in Wards 5, 7, 12 and 13 of Hanumannagar Kankalini Municipality and another 17 houses in Wards 4 and 5 of Tilathi Koiladi Rural Municipality.

Hanumannagar Kankalini Mayor Birendra Majhi said the flooding followed a rise in the water level of the Saptakoshi River on Friday night.

The municipality has arranged food for affected residents twice a day. Authorities plan to distribute additional relief supplies after water levels recede and affected households are assessed, Majhi said.

Meanwhile, several settlements in Nawalparasi (Bardaghat-Susta East) have been inundated following a rise in the water level of the Narayani River.

Bote Tol in Ward No. 2 of Gaindakot Municipality and the Amaltari area of Kawasoti have also been affected by flooding.

According to Police Inspector Anil Pandit, information officer at the District Police Office, Nawalparasi (Bardaghat-Susta East), residents of Bote Tol were evacuated to safer locations after the settlement was inundated.

The flooding comes amid continued rainfall in several parts of the country, with rising river levels and waterlogged settlements causing disruption and forcing residents in vulnerable areas to move to safer locations.
