Nepal seeks Chinese support to restore key Rasuwa trade route

Nepal has asked China to help restore road connectivity to Rasuwagadhi and reopen the Rasuwagadhi–Kerung border crossing, which was disrupted by flooding in Rasuwa.

Infrastructure Development Minister Sunil Lamsal made the request during a meeting with Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Wang Maoming at Singha Durbar on Friday.

Lamsal said the government was working to build a temporary road along the old route and resume transport services to ease the difficulties faced by local residents. He also sought Chinese assistance to urgently restore the Syafrubesi–Rasuwagadhi road section.

The minister said the government was preparing a new detailed project report for the long-term development of the Kathmandu–Rasuwagadhi–Kerung road and planned to open new tracks at necessary locations. He requested Chinese support and coordination for the project.

Lamsal also called for Chinese cooperation to ensure the effective operation of the Korala and Tatopani border points, saying improved connectivity was essential for the movement and access to government services of around 600,000 people.

Ambassador Wang said China was ready to provide possible assistance as a close friend and neighbour of Nepal. He said the reconstruction and reopening of Rasuwagadhi, an important trade gateway, should be based on a detailed assessment and focus on durable infrastructure.

Wang said China was also positive about operating the Korala and Tatopani border crossings. He pledged to facilitate necessary coordination and support if Nepal submits a specific proposal for the reconstruction and reopening of Rasuwagadhi.

Rasuwa has remained without direct road connectivity since floods on August 26 damaged infrastructure in the district. Although construction of a Bailey bridge over the Phalaku River has begun, direct road connectivity between Nuwakot and Rasuwa has yet to be fully restored.
