At least 15 killed in four days as floods, landslides and avalanche hit the country

At least 15 people have died in floods, landslides and other disasters across Nepal over the past four days, while more than 1,280 people have been rescued from affected areas, authorities said.

According to Nepal Police, three people died in Bagmati Province, four in Lumbini, five in Gandaki, two in Karnali and one in Madhesh. Four people have been injured and are receiving treatment at local hospitals.

Security personnel, local authorities and residents are continuing rescue and evacuation operations, including relocating families from high-risk areas and recovering property buried by landslides.

Two bodies recovered from Himlung avalanche
Two bodies have been recovered after an avalanche struck the base-camp area of Himlung Himal in Narpa Bhumi Rural Municipality-5 of Manang.

Nine climbers and 13 support staff had travelled to the area, and around 10 people are still believed to be missing or out of contact. All members of the expedition group are Nepali nationals.

A specialised rescue team including experienced mountaineering guides has been mobilised to the site. A helicopter carrying four rescuers, including mountaineer Mingma Gyalje Sherpa, has flown toward Himlung, according to the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association.

Four other guides remain in Kathmandu awaiting suitable weather and flying conditions. Eight guides had been placed on standby following reports that several people were missing after the avalanche.

The rescue team will search for missing people and assess the situation at the site. The 7,126-metre Himlung Himal lies in the Nar-Phu region of Manang.

Five killed in Palpa landslides
The death toll from landslides in Palpa has risen to five.

Police said the bodies of 75-year-old Lil Bahadur Gharti Magar, his 17-year-old daughter Dina Gharti and 15-year-old Jharna Gharti were recovered from a landslide in Mathagadhi Rural Municipality-3.

Earlier, 75-year-old Sher Bahadur Chidi of Mathagadhi-2 and 59-year-old Krishnakumari Saru of Ribdikot Rural Municipality-6 were killed in separate landslides.

The landslide that struck Gharti Magar's house occurred early in the morning after continuous rainfall, burying the house while the occupants were asleep. Rescue teams involving security personnel and local residents recovered three bodies from the debris.

Marshyangdi river partially blocked
In Manang, a landslide and flood from a tributary near Chame have partially blocked the Marshyangdi River, creating a temporary lake and raising concerns of downstream flooding.

The tributary flooded earlier, damaging six houses and forcing residents and trekkers to flee to safer locations. A house and two hotels across the river are reportedly at risk of inundation.

Chief District Officer Mukti Prasad Khanal said water was still flowing through the blocked section, meaning there was no immediate major threat. However, he warned that the size of the water accumulation upstream could not yet be determined.

Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to remain alert, while people displaced by the flooding are being sheltered in government buildings.

Kali Gandaki erodes Beni riverbank
In Myagdi, the rising Kali Gandaki River has begun eroding the riverbank in Beni after three days of continuous rainfall.

Beni Mayor Surat KC said floodwaters damaged about 100 metres of a concrete embankment behind Ganesh Tol, allowing the river to cut toward nearby settlements. An adjoining road has also been damaged.

Residents of vulnerable houses are being moved to safer areas. The water level at the confluence of the Myagdi and Kali Gandaki rivers has crossed the danger mark.

The Maldhunga-Beni road has been blocked, while roads connecting Beni with surrounding rural areas have also been disrupted. Electricity has been out since Saturday night and the town's water supply has been affected.

More than 500 families live in Beni's wards 7 and 8, prompting authorities to maintain heightened vigilance as rainfall and river levels remain a concern.
