Several parts of the country are likely to receive heavy rainfall over the next three days, with thunderstorms, lightning, strong winds and hail also expected in some areas, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.
The department said the country is currently being affected by a western low-pressure system as well as monsoonal winds.
As of Wednesday morning, the mountainous and hilly regions were generally cloudy, while the Terai experienced partly cloudy conditions. Moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning was reported in parts of Gandaki, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces, as well as isolated areas of Bagmati and Lumbini.
Pokhara recorded 29.4 mm of rainfall in the three hours before the morning bulletin, the highest among the locations listed by the department. Gilung in Lamjung recorded 19 mm, Malepatan 12.8 mm and the Narayani Field Office in Chitwan 13.8 mm during the same period.
Heavy rain forecast for Wednesday
The department has forecast moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, strong winds and hail at several places in the mountainous and hilly regions on Wednesday afternoon.
Some parts of the Terai in Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces are also likely to receive moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, strong winds and hail. Similar conditions are possible at a few places in the Terai of Madhesh, Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces.
Heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places in the hilly and Terai areas of Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces and in the hilly areas of Bagmati, Gandaki and Karnali provinces.
During Wednesday night, isolated parts of the high mountains may receive light rain or snowfall with thunderstorms. Moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms is also possible in parts of the hills of Karnali and Sudurpaschim, as well as isolated areas of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini.
Rain to continue through Friday
Weather conditions are expected to remain unsettled on Thursday, with generally cloudy skies over the mountains and hills. Some mountainous areas could receive light rain or snowfall with thunderstorms, while parts of the hills may experience rain accompanied by strong winds and hail.
Moderate rainfall with thunderstorms is possible at some places in the Terai, while heavy rain is likely at one or two places in the hilly areas of Bagmati and Gandaki provinces.
On Friday, moderate rain or snowfall with thunderstorms, strong winds and hail is expected in parts of the mountainous and hilly regions of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces.
Heavy rainfall is also possible at one or two places in the hills of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Sudurpaschim provinces, as well as in the Terai of Koshi Province.
The weather department has urged farmers and other concerned stakeholders, particularly in areas vulnerable to heavy rainfall, to regularly follow weather updates and take necessary precautions.
The department updates its regular weather forecast bulletin every day at 8 am and 6 pm.
