Heavy rain expected across Nepal as weather system intensifies

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall across several parts of the country from Friday to Sunday (September 25–27), with isolated areas potentially receiving extremely heavy rain.

The Gandaki and Lumbini provinces are expected to face the greatest risk, with some areas likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds. Isolated areas could see extremely heavy rainfall.

Heavy to very heavy rain is also possible in parts of Madhesh, Koshi, Bagmati and Sudurpaschim provinces, while some areas of Karnali Province may receive heavy rainfall. Most parts of the country are likely to experience moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning.

The weather department said a low-pressure system that developed over the North Andaman Sea and surrounding areas has moved into the central Bay of Bengal. The system is expected to strengthen into a deep depression and move west-northwestward. Its influence is expected to increase rainfall activity in Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces from Wednesday.

Authorities have warned of increased risks of flooding, landslides, soil erosion and debris flows. Urban and Tarai areas could face waterlogging, while rising water levels in major and minor rivers, streams and rivulets could disrupt daily life.

The adverse weather may also affect agriculture, health, tourism, road and air transport, and construction activities near river corridors. Farmers preparing to harvest paddy have been advised to make decisions in consultation with agricultural experts and updated weather information.

The department also warned that the system could bring heavy snowfall in mountainous areas, urging mountaineers and others in high-altitude regions to exercise increased caution.

DHM said it is continuously monitoring the weather system and will issue updates as conditions evolve. The public and concerned agencies have been urged to remain alert, take necessary precautions and regularly follow official weather forecasts.

Earlier reports had already warned that Nepal could face a prolonged spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall from September 24–28. Forecast models cited by meteorologists suggested the possibility of exceptionally high rainfall in some areas, although the exact intensity and locations remained uncertain. 

Authorities and weather experts had urged the public to prepare for potential flooding, landslides and waterlogging, while noting that the system’s eventual track and strength would determine its impact on Nepal.
