DishHome, Eutelsat provides free satellite internet in flood-hit Rasuwa

Dish Media Network (DishHome), in partnership with Eutelsat, has started providing free satellite internet services in flood-affected areas of Rasuwa district to help restore critical communications disrupted by damage to telecommunications infrastructure, according to DishHome.

The satellite internet service was introduced after severe flooding of the Bhotekoshi River on August 26 damaged telecommunications infrastructure in the district. With approval from the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA), DishHome began deploying Eutelsat OneWeb satellite internet from September 8.

Eutelsat OneWeb is a subsidiary of French satellite communications group Eutelsat that provides broadband internet services through a constellation of low Earth orbit satellites. OneWeb and Starlink are two major operational global LEO broadband constellations, with the former often described as an alternative/competitor to Starlink.

The free internet service is currently being provided to government offices, security forces, rescue camps and other important coordination centers in the affected areas. The service is helping authorities and rescue teams communicate and share information during search, rescue and relief operations.

According to Mahendra KC, DishHome Deputy Chief Executive Officer (DCEO), the damage to Nepal’s telecommunications sector from the recent disasters is significant and could amount to over NRs 1 billion. While communication services have been restored in most areas, challenges remain in some locations, particularly Rasuwa, where satellite internet has been instrumental in maintaining critical communications.

“The timeline for complete restoration will depend on access to the affected areas and the extent of infrastructure damage,” KC said.

He said satellite internet is not entirely new to Nepal, as satellite-based connectivity has previously been used through VSAT technology, particularly in remote areas and for critical services. However, the deployment of high-speed internet through Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites) is a new development for Nepal.

DishHome said the satellite service is intended to bridge the communication gap created by damaged ground networks.

“By deploying advanced low-Earth orbit connectivity through this Eutelsat partnership, and with the NTA’s regulatory support, this alternative satellite solution effectively bridges the gap left by damaged ground infrastructure, ensuring uninterrupted information exchange,” the company said in a press release.

KC said DishHome is also working toward a long-term partnership with Eutelsat. “We have been working toward establishing a long-term partnership with Eutelsat to explore opportunities for collaboration in Nepal,” he said.

He clarified that the current arrangement is focused on exploring ways for the two companies to collaborate in providing mission-critical connectivity services, particularly in areas where conventional telecommunications infrastructure is vulnerable or difficult to access.

DishHome said it will continue coordinating with government agencies and local authorities and expand satellite access to other priority areas if required. The service will continue until regular telecommunications and internet networks are repaired.
