weather updates
The monsoon is currently widespread, with partly to generally cloudy conditions all over the country for today (June 24th) and the upcoming two days, states the forecast of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.
By the day, cloudy weather is expected to prevail in Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Karnali Provinces, including the hilly areas of the country.
Some places in Koshi, Madhesh, Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces are predicted to experience light to moderate rainfall with thunder/lightning.
One or two places in the Koshi and Bagmati provinces are expected to receive high rainfall, with the possibility of snowfall in the high hills of these regions and the remaining mountainous areas.
Cloudy skies are predicted to persist at night as well. With light to moderate rainfall in many places of Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces, the forecast further predicts heavy rainfall in a few places of these regions and at one or two places in the remaining provinces. There’s an equal probability of moderate rain/snowfall in different mountainous areas of all provinces, at night too.
Kathmandu’s maximum temperature forecast for today is 28-30℃, and the minimum temperature for tonight is 19-21℃.
The department had forecasted cloudy conditions yesterday too, with heavy rainfall in some places of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces. Districts like Jhapa, Sankhuwasabha, Paanchthar, Chitwan and Sindhuli received 50-100 millimetres (mm) of rainfall, while Okhaldhunga experienced rainfall of more than 100 mm. The highest minimum and maximum temperatures yesterday were recorded in Banke (27.8℃) and Nawalparasi (36℃), and the lowest maximum and minimum temperatures were recorded in Manang (10℃) and Solukhumbu (18.7℃), respectively.
Kathmandu experienced partly cloudy conditions throughout the day yesterday, with light rainfall at night.
Over the week, a total of 6 people across the country have died due to monsoon-driven disasters—3 people due to thunderstorms, 2 due to flood, and 1 due to a landslide. On June 19th, a passenger bus from Kathmandu en route to Nepalgunj was swept by the Binayi khola’s flash flood, with all the 39 passengers rescued using an excavator.
This year, the country experienced a 15 days early monsoon onset on May 29th, although the prediction was for 1st June, and has since spread across the country since June 20th.
