763 monsoon disaster incidents claim 73 lives, damage 113 public projects and properties

The restoration cost of damaged public infrastructures and hydro projects is estimated at Rs 10.55 billion.

Monsoon-induced disasters wreaked havoc in the country in the past few months, according to the stats of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA).

In a total of 763 monsoon-induced incidents of disasters reported from June 14 to August 25, they claimed at least 73 lives, 20 individuals went missing and at least 113 public projects and properties were damaged.

Among 73 lives lost, 12 individuals died in 135 incidents of flooding, 38 in 429 landslides, 21 in 83 lightning strikes, and two in 116 events of heavy rainfall.

Damages to 30 hydropower projects, including 17 under construction, with a combined capacity of 326.83 MW and 13 operating of 132.75 MW, have been recorded. The loss was estimated at Rs 8.4 billion.

Similarly, 29 highways; four motorable bridges, 22 suspension bridges; and 28 federal drinking water projects have been destroyed — incurring estimated losses of Rs 0.4 billion; Rs 0.41 billion; and Rs 0.09 billion respectively.

It is estimated the restoration cost of the damaged public projects and properties stood at Rs 10.55 billion.
