Heavy rain forecast for Western Nepal as monsoon low-pressure line shifts North

The department has forecast generally cloudy conditions across the country on Monday, with thunderstorms and moderate rain likely in many parts of the mountainous and hilly areas of Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces.

Monsoon conditions continue to affect Nepal, with the monsoon low-pressure line positioned around its average location in the east and north of its average position, close to Nepal, in the west, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.

Rainfall is currently occurring in several parts of western Nepal, reported the department releasing its three-day forecast at 8 am, Monday. In the past hour, Baliya in Kailali recorded 31 mm of rainfall, while Sundarpur in Kanchanpur recorded 9 mm, Gokuleshwor in Baitadi 7 mm and Bargadaha in Bardiya 6.8 mm.

Over the past 24 hours, Putalibazar in Syangja recorded 118.4 mm of rainfall, while Dedhgaun in Nawalpur received 80.4 mm, according to the department.

The department has forecast generally cloudy conditions across the country on Monday, with thunderstorms and moderate rain likely in many parts of the mountainous and hilly areas of Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces. Some mountainous and hilly areas of Koshi and Bagmati provinces are also expected to receive moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning.

Moderate rainfall with thunderstorms is also likely in many parts of the Terai areas of Gandaki, Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces, as well as in Madhesh Province and some parts of the Terai in Koshi and Bagmati provinces.

Heavy rainfall is possible at one or two locations in the hilly areas of Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces, as well as in parts of the Terai in Lumbini and Sudurpaschim. There is also a chance of very heavy rainfall at one or two locations in the Lumbini Terai.

The weather is expected to remain unsettled overnight. Some mountainous and hilly areas could receive moderate rain or snowfall with thunder and lightning. Moderate thunderstorms are also possible in parts of the Terai in Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces, as well as in a few areas of the Madhesh Terai.

The department has warned of possible debris flows, floods, landslides and soil erosion in areas at risk of heavy rainfall. Such weather could disrupt daily life and affect agriculture, health, tourism, mountaineering, road transport and air services.

Rain to continue through Tuesday and Wednesday

Rainy conditions are expected to continue through Tuesday and Wednesday, with generally cloudy skies and moderate rain likely in many hilly areas.

Heavy rain is possible at one or two locations in the hilly areas of Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim on Tuesday, while on Wednesday the risk is focused on the hilly areas of Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini. Thunderstorms and moderate rain are also possible in parts of the Terai.

Authorities have urged residents and travelers in vulnerable areas to remain alert and follow the latest weather updates issued by the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.

The department regularly updates its weather forecast bulletin at 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. every day.
